Italian Proverb: I Grandi Dolori Sono Muti

May 20, 2025 By Larry Aiello

What does I Grandi Dolori Mean?

What does “I Grandi Dolori Sono Muti” Mean?

It basically means the greatest pain is mute or silent.

It was originally said by the great ancient Roman philosopher Seneca in Latin and then translated into Italian and other languages.

There is much suffering in the world, along with joy, but it often goes unnoticed or silent.  There is a saying about New York City that says there are 8 million stores in the city.  This of course pertains to the number of residents, and everyone has a unique story.  It is part of this fabric of the world that we live in.  Every one has a story and every one is unique.

And often those that complain the loudest are often those who overexaggerate their problems.  They often amplify their woes trying to evoke pity and create drama.

We all know those drama kings and queens.

Many times it’s the ones that suffer in silence that we need to worry about.  We all can lend a hand or an ear when needed.

If you think you know someone that is going through a tough time right now, then reach out.  And tell them that you care. It can make all the difference in the world.
