In this post, consider it a Palermo, Sicily picture tour zoom call. I will go over a Zoom call I did with my Meetup group, reviewing some of the many photos that I have taken during my travels to Palermo, Sicily.
Piazza della Vergogna, or Piazza of Shame or Piazza Pretoria
This square is one of the main tourist attractions of Palermo, Sicily. A Florentine architect originally came up with the design for this square. This square was originally part of a Florentine villa.
After the owner passed away, the estate had to sell the pieces to pay off his debts.
The City of Palermo decided to purchase the statues and the fountain to embellish its image. The architects of Palermo rearranged it from its current layout, and now it is one of the most beautiful squares in all of Italy.
It was considered scandalous with the naked statues, which were deemed pornographic. It is in the historical center of Palermo.
Italian Smart Cars and some traditional Sicilian horse carriages
There is also a picture of me with a Smart Car, a tiny car. Europeans use these to get around their cities. I can stretch my arms all across the width of the vehicle.
There is a Sicilian carriage that is riding down a typical Palermo neighborhood street.
Teatro Politeama
In the video, you will also see the famous Teatro Politeama. One of the participants mentioned that it looks like the Royal Albert Hall in London. After viewing some pictures online, I agree with that assessment.
During the call, we look at a traditional Sicilian puppet. Puppet theater is huge in Sicily.
Porta Nuova is an ancient door that leads into the city.
The Spanish built this door in 1583 during their occupation of Palermo.
Quattro Canti is an intersection of 4 Baroque-style buildings in the main historical center of Palermo.
Canti refers to the corners, whereas in Italian it would be called angoli.
Via Vittorio Emanuele is a central pedestrian area of Palermo. There are tables set up now for outside dining. It is called a ZTL zone in Italian or Zona di Traffico Limitato.
