La Cala Old Historical Port Area of Palermo

September 8, 2025 By Larry Aiello

In this post I will look at La Cala old historical port area of Palermo at night.

La Cala is a district by the port area of Palermo, Sicily, that has been around for centuries and dates back to Phoenician times. This area is one of the oldest ports in all of Europe. Ancient rivers once flowed into this port, but the Spanish filled them in to promote area development.

La Cala at Night

In the accompanying video, you can see many people enjoying a stroll along the marina park area, with luxurious boats and expensive yachts docked at the harbor.

Nearby are cruise terminals where you can depart for various European destinations. You can also take a ferry to Tunisia.

La Cala is near Porta Felice, one of the ancient gates that led into the city of Palermo. The other gate, known as Porta Nuova, is a few kilometers away along the scenic and historical Via Vittorio Emanuele.

The City of Palermo, along with the help of an Arab businessman, has revitalized the area. A far cry from the rubble that existed here after the Second World War. It is now an environmentally green area near the ancient port of Palermo, where you can jog, enjoy the cafes and bars, and sip on an aperitivo at night.

Jogging in Palermo

La Cala is a popular area for joggers, who often run from one of the hotels or Airbnbs in the historical center down to the port area.

Today, La Cala is a pedestrian-friendly area with restaurants and shops that visitors can explore during the day. There is a beautiful fountain behind all the shops, and it is a great place to view the Port of Palermo while enjoying a cappuccino or espresso alongside the marina.

It comes alive on weekends, especially at night. The nightlife in Palermo is very active and lively. Parking is very problematic alongside the main road that leads into the marina.

From Quattro Canti, the historical center of Palermo, La Cala is about a 20-minute walk.
