Italian Verb Essere Meaning and Conjugation

In this post we will look at the Italian verb essere meaning and conjugation and the importance in the Italian language.

The verb essere in Italian means “to be”.

It is one of the most important verbs to understand when learning the Italian language. It has many uses and functions and forms an essential building block or foundation in learning the language. The other essential building block when learning the language is the Italian verb avere.

Uses of the verb Essere in Italian

  • Essere is used to describe identity or characteristics, as well as adjectives.

I am American – io sono americano (americana)
You are nice – tu sei simpatico (simpatica)

  • The verb can indicate location in some circumstances.

Where are you? – Dove sei?
I am in Paris – Io sono a parigi

  • Essere can form the passive voice.

The book is written by Frank – Il libro è scritto da Franco

  • It can form compound tenses when used as an auxiliary verb.

I went to the pharmacy – Sono andato alla farmacia

Conjugation of the Italian Verb Essere – Present Tense

First person singular
I am – io sono

Second person singular
You are – tu sei

Third person singular
he/she (You formal) / it – Lui / lei / Lei è

First person plural
We are – noi siamo

Second person plural
You (plural) are – this would be like y’all in southern English
Voi siete

Third person plural
They are
Loro sono

Common Expressions of the Italian Verb Essere:

To be happy – essere felice
To be sad – essere triste
To be late – essere in ritardo
To be ready – essere pronto
To be on time – essere in orario

The imperfect tense in Italian describes habitual or ongoing actions in the past.

I was – io ero
You were – tu eri
He / She (You formal) / It – Lui / lei (Lei) era
We were – noi eravamo
You (plural) were – Voi eravate
They were – Loro erano
