In the video below, I am in Palermo, and you can find out the answer to the question: Do they celebrate Black Friday in Italy?
When most people think of Black Friday in the United States, they picture deeply discounted items that draw crowds to stores the day after Thanksgiving.
These people will fight to get up early and deal with stress, even fights, over the discounted items—crowded stores filled with angry mobs looking for deals.
But what happens in Italy? Do they celebrate Black Friday in Italy?
Is Thanksgiving Celebrated in Italy?
Even though Italians do not celebrate Thanksgiving per se, Black Friday is increasingly an Italian retail event, and Italians now expect sales and deeply discounted items in advance of the Christmas season. Over the last 10 years, it has become more ingrained in Italian culture.
It’s interesting to note that the Italians use the English word “Black Friday ” in their advertising, but you will also see the Italian equivalent, “Venerdì Nero”. Note that the adjective comes after the noun in Italian.
English Words in the Italian Language
They also use words such as “prezzo black” and “settimana black“, meaning “black price” and “black week”, respectively.
Many English words have entered the Italian language. It is one of my pet peeves. I believe that in 50 years, the Italian language may cease to exist, as they will adopt every single English word into their language.
It’s interesting to note that the English word’ sale’ is the same as the Italian word for salt. When one of my relatives was visiting the United States, she would see the word “sale” on storefront windows, thinking that they sold salt.
