Una cena senza vino è come un giorno senza sole

May 28, 2025 By Larry Aiello

una cena senza vino Italian proverbItalian Proverb: What does Una cena senza vino è come un giorno senza sole mean?

This Italian proverb or saying signifies the importance of wine in the Italian culture. It simply means a dinner without wine is like a day without sunshine.

They are one of the top countries producing wine in the entire world. They produce both red and white wine varieties. The top producing regions are the Veneto region, Tuscany and Piedmont. These are all located in the northern part of the country.

Veneto – famous city – Venice
Tuscany – famous city – Florence
Piedmont – famous city – Turin

Sicily is also a big wine producer located in the southernmost part of the country.

It is common for Italians to consume a glass or two of wine during dinner. There are many studies conducted that conclude that a glass or two of red wine has health benefits for the heart.

Pairing the right wine with the proper dish enhances the whole Italian dining experience.  The wine will make the food taste better and the food will make the wine tase better.  It has a synergistic effect.

Italian Vocabulary

Now let’s take a look at some Italian vocabulary and how it plays into the proverb above.

Vino – wine
Vino rosso – red wine
Vino bianco – white wine
Vino da Tavola – table wine
Enoteca – a place where wine is sold, sometimes food can be served as well.

Meal – pasto
Cena – dinner
Colazione – breakfast – as you can imagine, wine is not typically consumed for breakfast.
Pranzo – lunch

Giorno – day

Here are some Italian pronunciation tips.  Note that the “Gi” in Giorno is pronounced like the “j” in jungle.

An easy way to learn this phrase is also to think of the word journal, which some people commit to writing in theirs every day.

And another similar word that will help you remember this is:
Giornale – newspaper

Senza – without, like “sans” in French or “sin” in Spanish.
Sole – Sun

An easy way to remember “sole” for sun is that we use the word solar as in a solar eclipse.

Dining Hours in Italy

One thing to note it that Italians like to dine late. Italians like to have dinner typically around 8 PM and can linger over a meal for a couple of hours. In the southern part of the country like Sicily, dinner can start around 9 PM for some households. The typical Italian household will usually have a protein like chicken, steak or fish for dinner.
Lunch (Pranzo) is generally eaten around 2 PM and is usually a pasta dish as the main meal.

Breakfast is usually around 7AM and is very light, usually a croissant with a coffee to start the day.

Therefore, to summarize the meaning of the proverb in Italian:

Una cena senza vino è come un giorno senza sole

A dinner without wine is like a day without sunshine.
