Palatine Chapel in Palermo Sicily

January 19, 2026 By Larry Aiello

In this video below I am at the Palatine Chapel in Palermo, Sicily.

Inside the nondescript Palazzo dei Normanni lies one of Palermo’s most breathtaking treasures: the Palatina Chapel (Cappella Palatina). This is a sacred space where art, culture, and faith come together.

King Roger II of Sicily commissioned the chapel in 1132, and it took 8 years to complete. Sicily during this period was under the rule of monarchs. The chapel served as a private place of worship for the royal family. It is built on high ground overlooking the sea. This placement helped protect it from invaders.

King Roger II’s Vision for Sicily

King Roger II’s vision was bold for its time. Sicily was a crossroads of many civilizations. Each left an indelible mark. The chapel’s architecture and decoration reflect Norman structural forms and Byzantine-style mosaics. It also includes Arabic wooden ceilings and motifs from Greek and Muslim traditions. This blend of influences is unique.

Palatine Chapel Mosaics

The mosaics serve more than decoration. They depict visual stories from the Bible. There are narratives of angels and saints. The images are rendered with remarkable detail and precision. These works show the full range of human emotions. Early mosaics were completed by Byzantine artisans. Local artists finished the work later in the 12th century.

The chapel stands as an example and a testament to how all cultures coexist harmoniously and create a synergistic beauty. Theoretically, it should not be beautiful, but when combined together, it defies logic.

The chapel is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale.

Visiting the Chapel

The chapel is part of the Norman Palace or Palazzo Normanni. The full ticket includes admission to the palace, the royal bedrooms, the chapel, and the royal gardens. Make sure the chapel is open when you visit, as it is the highlight of the complex. It is located near the Porta Nuova, about a 10-minute walk from the main cathedral.
